#mydailykafka

Vom 17.

„ich lief weiter“ – „I KEPT running“ or „I ran FURTHER“?
In Kafka’s world things do suddenly appear without being mentioned beforehand. But „I kept running“ commits us exclusively to this idea.
Perhaps another thought is also implied: For those who cover ever greater distances, the world seems to be shrinking. But how could this also be hinted at in an English version?

A school class is currently studying Kafka. The teacher has invited Kafka’s mouse into the classroom as the climax of the unit.
Teacher: The students were having trouble correctly interpreting the passage about the trap. Could you help us? The main problem was the following question:
Do you habitually run into the trap, or are you currently running into it, or are you about to run into it?
Mouse: You do not run into traps. You walk. Or you fall.

Ich plädiere auf mildernde Umstände. Damals haben alle Mäuse gefressen. Das war so üblich. Das hat keiner in Frage gestellt.

I plead mitigating circumstances. Back then, everyone ate mice — it was common practice, and no one questioned it.
